Villa Brando: life in the Lodi countryside
By Redazione The Plan -

Villa Brando is a contemporary residence designed by ALMAdesign that places an emphasis on outdoor spaces and life lived in direct contact with the Lodi countryside. It achieves this through the interplay of solids and voids, perspectives and volumes created by its balconies and porticoes. During both design and construction of all its spaces, great attention was paid to permeability and continuity, both physical and visual, in response to the client’s very specific brief. Set amid greenery and featuring a large garden and swimming pool, all the rooms have sweeping views of the outdoors, establishing a constant two-way connection between the internal and external dimensions of the home.

As a part of this dialogue, the neutral, soft tones of the interior play a key role, helping to establish a balance and harmony with the outdoors. Examples are the timber floors and staircase, as well as the windows and doors supplied by Oknoplast. A variety of products was selected for this project, including both sliding and swing models in PVC that help emphasize the geometries of the home. Specifically, HST sliding and Prolux Evolution models were installed. The former are found in the main rooms, such as the living area and bedrooms, where their characteristic ability to dematerialize architectural barriers and create panoramic effects are exploited. Despite the large dimensions involved – up to almost 20 feet (6 m) of glazed surfaces with two or four leaves – the windows and doors provide excellent insulation (with a Uw value as low as 0.77 W/m2K), while their movement is light and fluid.

Prolux Evolution casement windows were used to maximize the amount of natural light inside the home thanks to their linear and minimal design. Their slender profile and reduced wall-widow interface made it possible to have larger glass surfaces and larger double glazing units, which are made using highly transparent extra-light glass. Prolux Evolution can guarantee up to 22% higher brightness than traditional PVC windows, while still providing excellent performance in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation (a Uw value as low as 0.8 W/m2K with triple glazing). The patented, compact, and squared design of the window fits harmoniously into a contemporary setting that’s characterized by the pronounced lines of the furniture.

From the chromatic point of view, understated shades of white and gray prevail throughout the home. The color of the doors and windows, however, is anthracite, chosen to stand out against the neutral setting and frame the views of the garden.

When working on this project, the architects opted for materials and light fixtures that could enhance the monolithic aspect of the building, even at dusk, emphasizing its compositional elements.
