THE PLAN 142, the seventh edition for 2022, includes an editorial by Frank Barkow as well as the columns Viaggio in Italia by Valerio Paolo Mosco, Highlights by Michael Webb, and Letter from America by Raymund Ryan. The cover features the Golden Mountain Upper Cloister, a project by Atelier Deshaus in Chengde, Hebei province, China.
The issue opens with the editorial “Experimental” by Frank Barkow, founder and partner of Barkow Leibinger. Basing the piece on his own direct experience, Barkow tackles the issue of experimentation in architecture and demonstrates how it’s a process that has led to an evolution in the way he works.
The focus of Valerio Paolo Mosco’s Viaggio in Italia column is Pietro Carlo Pellegrini, an architect who combines critical regionalism, sustainability, and environmental sensitivity. Featured works from his portfolio include the cultural center in Casale Marittimo.
In Letter from America, Raymund Ryan looks at the Ace Hotel Toronto, designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, while Michael Webb’s Highlights column is dedicated to Johnson Fain’s First Americans Museum, a museum dedicated to Native American history that was developed together with a wide-ranging team of consultants.
The Old & New column makes a return, featuring a house designed by Studio Odile Decq in Carantec, on the Brittany coast (France): a glazed villa overlooking the ocean and built near a fort.
Through the skillful use of concrete and simple geometric shapes, with Casa Patio in Lo Curro (Santiago, Chile) Mathias Klotz has created architecture that blends in with its natural setting on the slopes of Cerro Manquehue.
Kendall Square at MIT – Site 5, designed by Weiss/Manfredi, is a dynamic building that, besides achieving high-performance at every level, enriches the urban fabric of Cambridge both visually and from the perspective of greater convenience for the community.
Villa E, designed by South Tyrolean studio bergmeisterwolf, stands on a rocky slope above Lake Maggiore. Its various concrete surfaces, both bush hammered and smooth, create material contrasts that help the house dialogue with its natural setting.
The issue closes with the Golden Mountain Upper Cloister in Chengde, China. In this project, Atelier Deshaus has created a space for Zen meditation in which shapes and proportions blend with the natural surroundings.
