The Overall Winner of the 2022 Architecture Drawing Prize was announced at the World Architecture Festival by co-curators Make Architects and Sir John Soane’s Museum. Original and colorful, the winning drawing is a simple image of a set table that’s full of architectural details, including a plan, sections, and elevations. Entitled Fitzroy Food Institute and also the winner of the Hybrid Category, the drawing by Samuel Wen and Michael Ren took out the prize ahead of The Spirit of Mountain from the Hand-Drawn Category and The Wall from the Digital Category.
By combining different techniques, the two artists challenged some of the stereotypes about their Chinese culture and tradition. “We feel honored and beyond grateful that our work has received such recognition,” said Samuel Wen, a Bachelor of Design and Master of Architecture graduate from the University of Melbourne, and a student architect at Cox Architecture. “Being able to convey such ideas and a captivating narrative through drawing had been the aim from the beginning.”
Collaboration and making the best of each other’s talents were key to winning the award, added Michael Ren, a designer/educator and currently a Master of Architecture student at UC Berkeley CED. “We were able to work through this project by identifying individual strengths and weaknesses. Samuel has always been passionate about hand-drawn illustrations, whereas I have an aptitude for digital renderings. Incorporating both methods of representation acknowledge a post-digital era in architectural visualization.”
“Fitzroy Food Institute stands out for its well-considered and subtle use of color,” remarked Ken Shuttleworth, founder of Make Architects and Prize judge. It’s a very accessible drawing looking over a shared meal at a table; yet it is full of architectural interest, featuring not only a plan, but sections and elevations as well as detail. A conceptually original and genuinely delightful entry.”
Until May 7, 2023, the entries will be on display at the Sir John Soane’s Museum thanks to the support of Iris Ceramica Group. By showing the winning and commended drawings, the exhibition is intended to be a celebration of the communication of ideas and design concepts through drawings that can be either purely conceptual or relate to a project to be built.
Reflecting the sensitivities of today, the key themes this year related to the environment and the sustainability of human life on earth, while also reflecting the potential of architectural drawing to let the mind wander freely.
