Future Lab is the theme of Fuorisalone 2023, which will take place in Milan, April 17–23, presented by Studiolabo. This year, the most important international event for the design world will ponder the question of how we imagine the future. With exhibitions, installations, and panel discussions, Milano Design Week is an opportunity for debate, interaction with the broader design community, the fermentation of ideas, and ongoing experimentation. It takes place throughout the city parallel to Salone del Mobile, which is staged at the Milan exhibition complex in Rho. In 2022, the Fuorisalone.it platform listed over 800 events, the names of 1380 designers, and 1061 brands. The site attracted 360 thousand unique users and 2.2 million pageviews.

“Fuorisalone isn’t just a point of reference for a sector that champions the quality of Italian-made products, but also a great opportunity for Milan,” says Alessia Cappello, councilor for Labor and Economic Development for the City of Milan, whose responsibilities include the fashion and design sectors.

In the face of today’s many challenges – first and foremost the climate emergency, the pandemic, the war, and, more recently, events like the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, and the massacre of migrants in Calabria – Future Lab is presenting design as a medium for both reflection and collective action. Sustainable design, circular economy, innovative materials, urban regeneration, and artificial intelligence are just some of the topics the event is tabling for discussion among designers, architects, schools, universities, and institutions. While this exchange will be enhanced by face-to-face interaction, it will also be presented in a single virtual space through Inspire, a digital interface that will let you discover all the content and trends on show at Milano Design Week with just a click.

“Fuorisalone is an opportunity for networking and sharing – a place for workshopping knowledge and experiences with the broader industry community,” said Paolo Casati, cofounder and creative director of Studiolabo. “That’s the inspiration behind this year’s theme: the laboratory as a center of activity where knowledge is shared. And it is essential that we combine our skills to lay the foundations for a better future.”

This year’s Fuorisalone has a packed program of exhibits and events, beginning with the Oracle of Fuorisalone. A deck of 28 cards illustrated by Serena Mazzi and produced as a limited edition by Rome-based printer Tiburtini. The deck is a tool conceived by Studiolabo intended to inspire action and ideas in the hands of creative designers.

The Fuorisalone Award will be held again this year to recognize the most memorable installations presented at Milano Design Week. The award is decided on the basis of a public vote, while a technical committee has the job of focusing attention on projects of particular importance to the design sector. Four special mentions will be awarded by the jury of industry experts in the following categories: Interaction, Sustainability, Technology, and Communication. An exciting new development this year will be a special mention awarded by the Salone del Mobile in conjunction with the biennial Euroluce lighting exhibition. The Salone del Mobile Special Mention. Milan: City Lights will be awarded to the lighting project that has the best public reception from those presented at Salone between June 2022 and today.

“Again this year, the Fuorisalone Award is continuing its mission of identifying the projects of greatest importance to the world of design,” commented Cristian Confalonieri, cofounder of Studiolabo. “On top of this, the new Special Mention by the Salone Del Mobile.Milano indicates a desire to systematize and boost the city of Milan as a point of reference for the furniture and design sectors.”

The regular e.Reporter event will return in 2023. First staged in 2003, the event is aimed at design, architecture, and visual arts students with a passion for photography and audiovisual content. Over the years, the project has produced over 180 thousand images, which today represent a historical archive of the event. Once again, Politecnico di Milano will be collaborating with Studiolabo to offer students from the School of Design, the Faculty of Architecture, and the POLI.Design program the chance to contribute their images to this collective narrative.

Fuorisalone takes place in different parts of the city, dubbed design districts, each with its own marketing campaign and format, and its own busy events program.

For the 14th Brera Design Week, the Brera Design District has put together a program of over 250 events, including exhibitions, installations, and product launches. The Future Is Now is the slogan chosen for this the most iconic district of Milan, as it interprets the Future Lab theme to underscore that giving shape and meaning to the future is already a priority. Like every year, the job of creating a promotional image for the district was entrusted to an artist, whose illustration appears on the cover of the events guide and paper map. This year that artist was Mirko Càmia, an illustrator who’s won numerous awards in Italy and abroad, and cofounder of the Sail Ho design studio.

Superstudio is making its return with the Superdesign Show, an event with the theme INSPIRATION INNOVATION IMAGINATION. Finally, Tortona Design Week will be presenting the Future to Share project.

Milano Durini Design features an event involving over 40 design practices, united by the common theme of Urban Metamorphosis, and a series of powerfully evocative installations.

Meanwhile, 5VIE has invited international curators, artists, and designers, along with independent studios and companies, to address the theme of Design for Good, which will focus on designer products, and the crosspollination between design, art, and crafts.
