Architect Vaccarini’s Powerbarn is a remarkable example of how a new industrial project on a remediated brownfield site can give rise to a striking architecture that gives a vital thrust to the whole area. Turned into a linear public park, the system of artificial dunes harks back to typical features of Italy’s Adriatic coast, helping to embed the new power plant in the landscape. The biomass power plant’s physical presence is mitigated by the irregularly pleated patterns of the timber cladding on the façades that do not follow the shape of the building behind.
