Now in its fifth edition, the Archizinc Trophy, founded and promoted by VMZinc, is a two-yearly architecture Award, acknowledging excellence in the way zinc is used to enhance the functional, aesthetic and environmental quality in architecture. There are three categories and special sections. The Jury’s Special Award went to John Ronan’s Poetry Foundation in Chicago, USA. A perforated and undulated black zinc mesh screens but also reveals the building’s glazed curtain walls behind and the trees in the foreground. The play of transparencies varies as the day proceeds and with the distance of the viewer. The programme demonstrates the workability and resistance of zinc. The Public Buildings category was won by Junk & Reich Architekten for the distinctive roof of the historical library of an Augustinian monastery that blends naturally with the stone façades. Cassette-shaped zinc panels provide a uniform surface finish in effortless continuity with the stone below. The Jury considered this an excellent example of how past and present can dialogue. For the Individual Housing category, the award went to the residence designed by Fabien Chavignaud at Carquefou, France. The building echoes the traditional slate or metal roofs of the area with an anthracite zinc outer skin chosen for its opaque appearance, durability and workability. The Commercial Buildings category was won by architect Dean Marchetto for the extension to his firm’s premises located in an early 20th century former brick church in Hoboken, USA. An apse-shaped volume added to the rear façade has been clad with six-sided natural zinc shingles pre-treated to give shades of rust and green. The programme demonstrates to great effect how zinc can be used in shingle form on large exterior expanses that exalt subtle colouring effects.
