Gucci has decided to relocate some of its already existing Florentine activities to the Scanducci district; for this at their complex abutting the A1 motorway t hey have converted an abandoned industrial unit into a brand new office block. To plans by Genius Loci Architettura this is simple and compact in shape: materials and façade systems are in keeping with the company image as a generator of both tradition and modernity. The outer shell alternates between copper, glass, GRC panelling. Visually what stands out most is the thermal insulation system and protection from glare, seen on portions of the east and west elevations where a copper lattice is sandwiched between glass panels to form the hallmark of the new building. Ground level is lower towards the open countryside than towards the motorway. A sunken paved area inlaid with wood and stone, a stretch of turf and some planted trees separates the building from the carpark; some of this is covered with pergola-like metal tubing. Access to the new block is across a pedestrian bridge. The foyer stretches right through to a terrace overlooking the interior courtyard which is a public amenity area gained by a wood and metal staircase. Over it hang outer walkways and traditional brick infill wall sections. The entrance hall thus looks two ways, connecting the outside world to the inner sanctum: a place where the function of reception also acts as an interchange. As the space rises up full height inside, one sees how the volumes are deployed; the main stairway leading to upper floors is marked out flight by flight; the internal composition is a clean arrangement of stairs and glass-bannistered galleries; through the transparent glass curtainwall one glimpses the central court. Functionally subdivided, the four floors form a complex organism.
