After the Flood: Building on Higher Ground
By Redazione The Plan -

Organised by Architectural Record in collaboration with Tulane University School of Architecture, the “High density on High Ground”
competition asked professional practitioners to present a reconstruction project following the devastation wreaked by hurricane Katrina on New Orleans in 2005.

The site, the size of a whole city block, is located in Bywater, a mid 19th century neighbourhood of New Orleans downstream of the French Quarter and right up against the levee along the Mississippi.

Some of the submissions were shown at the “After the Flood” exhibition organised with the support of Autodesk at the United States pavilion of the 10th International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

The competition required a project for 160 single- and multi-family dwellings varying from 65 to 200sqm, with 1400sqm for retail and services, and 460sqm for the “city center” space of Tulane University School of Architecture.

The winners, Anderson Anderson Architecture, presented a hybrid metal and glass gridded structure reminiscent of typical New Orleans houses known as “Camel Back” and “Shot Gun”. Eight Inc. were runners-up. Their 12 storey building for 160 prefabricated homes presents a highly original, variable façade.
