The design by architectural practices Helen & Hard and SAAHA for offices for Sparebank 1 SR-Bank in Stavanger, in Norway, placed great importance of producing a welcoming, healthy space with minimal environmental impact by making smart construction and material choices that would also limit the carbon footprint during construction.
The complex is 22,600 sq. m, making it the largest wooden commercial building in Norway, and one of the largest in Europe.
The decision to use wood, along with other sustainable solutions, was central in obtaining BREEAM - Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method certification for the building.
And Mapei’s products played their part in this achievement.
For example, Uniplan Eco self-levelling cement-based mortar was used in the creation of the floors, as it has Emicode EC1PLUS certification for giving off low levels of volatile organic compounds and an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The other products selected during construction that helped ensure user comfort, while limiting the environmental impact, were Mapelastic cementitious mortar for waterproofing concrete, Megafix high performance cementitious adhesive, Ultracolor Plus cementitious mortar for grouting and Mapegum WPS liquid membrane for interior waterproofing.
The success of the entire project was confirmed with its taking home the “2019 Construction of the Year” for Norwegian builders and the “2019 Wood Construction of the Year” award.
