Radisson Collection Hotel Palazzo Nani Venice, preserving the past by designing the future

The historic Palazzo Nani, an elegant 16th century building overlooking the Cannaregio Canal in Venice, has become a 5-star Radisson Collection Hotel designed by Studio Marco Piva: Radisson Collection Hotel, Palazzo Nani Venice, is the fourth Italian structure of the Radisson Collection Hotel brand, for which Studio Marco Piva also designed the Palazzo Touring Club in Milan. Preserving the past by designing the future: former home of the noble Nani family and then a school, Palazzo Nani has reopened its doors to the city, after an important renovation by Studio Marco Piva for interior design, Venice Plan for the architecture and construction management and Sirecon for the restoration. All carried out under the supervision and in agreement with the Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for the Municipality of Venice, as the property is subject to the protection regime for its historical value. Preserving the past by designing the future: this is the goal of the new hotel that evolves the concept of luxury, giving it a cultural and refined value, which combines the artistic heritage with a profound aesthetic research: the best design is integrated with the emotional and social status of the work, increasing its prestige even more. A change of use that has kept the historical and artistic value of the building intact, preserving and emphasizing the original structures and floors, as well as all the frescoes, magnified with the use of light. The 52 rooms of the historic Palazzo Nani are all different from each other: 36 standard rooms, 15 suites and one Presidential Suite. In addition, Studio Marco Piva has obtained and oversaw the interior design of 3 private apartments. Most of the suites have a historical and artistic value and are therefore subject to restrictions by the Superintendence of Artistic Heritage. High ceilings (up to 4.35 m), with original frescoes or exposed beams, immerse guests in the Renaissance era, while the design recalls some of the original architectural features such as the arch of the facade, brought inside the building as a recurring decorative element. Various solutions have also been studied to mask the electrical systems and insert the lighting where the constraint to the wall and ceiling existed. Of particular impact is the design of the walk-in wardrobes, which through functional panels with full-height mirrors, mark a passage that recalls the ancient Venetian private courtyards, but also serve to contain the fancoils. The rooms are designed as mini-apartments, a sort of "timed residences" with an important functional flexibility, articulated with generous spaces to allow the possibility of being lived for different needs, and have greater security and privacy. The use of different fabrics recall the Venetian traditions, with chromatic and decorative palettes taken from the city, while the new thresholds of the doors interpret the pre-existing seeds preserved in a modern key. Even the woods and essences refer to the traditional briccole of Venice, as well as the glass to the ancient art of blowing and to nearby Murano, and the metals symbolize the reflections of the lagoon. Even the marbles, with strong veins such as Palissandro Nuvolato and Bardiglio Nuvolato, are a reminder of the water and movements of the Venetian lagoon. The furniture, almost completely custom, is self-standing and flexible, so as not to affect the historic walls. The emotional element and reference to the place is the lifeblood of the project: everything has been studied and designed with the intention of finding a reference to the city of Venice. The work of Studio Marco Piva was therefore based on dialogue with the existing on the one hand, and with the history of the place on the other, in a combination of past and future, for a touch of contemporaneity respecting history. The Palazzo Nani Project gives Venice a "special place" able to offer the best of hospitality in a luxurious, attractive and osmotic context: a harmonious whole that - between history, art and design - offers all its guests and visitors a refined welcome in continuity with the best Venetian tradition. Palazzo Nani, thanks to the meticulous restoration of its monumental parts, its friezes and the wonderful frescoes, has returned to new life and will continue to pass his beauty also through a non-invasive but elegant and light Interior Design. A new "cultured residential" linked to tourism, in which Art and History blend with the needs and services of the 21st century.

Curriculum

Studio Marco Piva is in the creative and multicultural heart of Milan: an academy of sciences more than a design studio, an experimental workshop where different design scales are dealt with methodological rigor, from masterplanning to architecture, from interiors to industrial design. The continuous research on the formal and functional characteristics of spaces, on technologies and materials, developed with great attention to the environment, are the founding elements of the design of the Studio.
Recent developments are the Radisson Collection Hotel, Palazzo Touring Club in Milan and Palazzo Nani in Venice, urban masterplans in China, the Tonino Lamborghini Tower complex in Chengdu, private villas in Beverly Hills, Shanghai, Melbourne, Accra, Dubai and Moscow, Princype and Syre residential complexes in Milan, the recovery of historic buildings in Milan, Venice and Shanghai, as well as the design of products for the most important Italian companies.
