WATERPROOFING FOR ROOFS
Lifestyles have changed, leading to a transformation of living spaces as construction has developed to keep in touch with modern demands. Roofs, terraces and balconies are very much part of such change, becoming genuine extensions to the home. All roofs and terraces, regardless of their specific use, need to be properly waterproofed, using products that adapt to the building’s shapes and the type of flooring. A villa in Santa Lucia di Piave designed by Erich Milanese from the Milanese Architects Office is a wonderful example of such waterproofing, and close cooperation between Mapei and the designer. This project presented a unique challenge as the fundamental structure is a “uniform box”, but the designer wanted to keep the texture very natural and the slope of the roof had to flow seamlessly into the walls. Mapei’s solution was use a waterproofing system starting with a coat of self-adhesive bituminous membrane, then a layer of insulating panels before casting a 20-cm thick layer of concrete. Once this concrete substrate layer had been sanded down, a coat of Primer 3296 diluted 1:1 with water was applied. This was followed by a layer of Mapelastic Smart, a two component, high-flexibility cementitious mortar. To increase the ability of this layer to stretch and improve its crack-binding properties, Mapetex Sel macro-holed, non-woven polypropylene fabric was added to it. After this treatment was complete, the roof was painted and protected using Elastocolor Waterproof, a flexible, water-dispersed acrylic resin-based paint. The fillet joints between the gutters and the roof, and between the skylights and the roof vents - i.e. those points were rainwater often seeps in - were coated with Eporip two-component, solvent-free epoxy adhesive as this ensures monolithic sealing of cracks. Then, after covering the surface with quartz sand, these sections were also waterproofed using the system described above.
