Tasting Wine while Embraced by Wood

Cantine Nervi Winery
By Redazione The Plan -

The new headquarters for Cantine Nervi, located in Gattinara, in Vercelli province in Piedmont, includes an oak parquet floor and a wood barrel roof. CP Parquet was involved in the project to build this new multifunctional complex that combines offices, wine-making facilities and spaces for welcoming guests. Founded in the early 20th century, Cantine Nervi is the oldest winery producing Gattinara DOCG. The estate sprawls across 27 ha on the slopes of Monte Rosa, flush with Nebbiolo grapes, and a few years ago it was acquired by Roberto Conterno, from Barolo, who immediately turned to architect Gian Carlo Primatesta and his practice to produce a design to extend the complex.

The two above-ground floors of the tasting room are the fulcrum of the new space, overlooking a barrel room and bottling area where the use of glazed walls offers an unparalleled view of the space below. Professional sommeliers and amateur wine-lovers can delight in superb Nebbiolo wines while gazing at some of the key spaces in their production. The suspended room has a spectacular wooden roof with rhomboidal ribs, inspired by the work of engineer Pier Luigi Nervi. The coffered roof with exposed arched beams covering an expansive 23-m single span rising, at its peak, to 10.5 m, creates a dynamic interplay with the black metal load-bearing structures and the oak flooring by CP Parquet (supplied and laid by Bea di Bellardi company), made with 3-layer Antico Asolo natural wood planks and finished with a rustic effect and light brushing. CP Parquet, from Treviso, also produced custom-made curved steps in the same oak wood that lead to the tasting room. The same parquet is then also used in the hall, offices and bathrooms, where it is even used to clad the walls and flanked by white marble inserts for the washbasin countertops.

The extensive glazing on all sides of the building floods the interior with natural light, exalting the wood of the parquet, drawing out the colors, knots and veins. CP Parquet was not only chosen for this project because of the quality of its wooden surfaces, but especially because of its quite unique hues of oak, which fit perfectly with the color of the barrels. The chosen wood for this parquet comes from responsibly cultivated forests that are managed sustainably to ensure long-term ecosystem balance and regeneration.

The raw materials are processed with a water-based coating and low VOC emission glue, while the finishings are done by hand by master artisans.
