Mandarin Oriental Hotel
By Redazione The Plan -

Right in the centre of Milan, a stone’s throw from via Montenapoleone and La Scala theatre, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel occupies four 19th century buildings that have undergone full restoration and restyling by the firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel Interiors.

The hotel has 104 bedrooms, 31 of which suites, a holistic spa with swimming pool and fitness centre, a cocktail bar and restaurants, as well as conference and functions rooms.

The furniture and fittings on the ground floor along with the wall and ceiling cladding for the public areas and back-office were designed by Paolo Castelli, which also oversaw and coordinated the other suppliers on site. The overall project combines typical Milanese architecture and design with the unabashed panache for which this hotel chain is famous.

The programme combines rich marbles, warm wood and elegant black nickel. Finely crafted materials, geometrical patterns on walls and floors, carefully blended colours and designer furniture and furnishings create an unmistakable, highly sophisticated series of environments.

The reception area is dominated by a huge central fireplace in grey stone and striking white-streaked grey marble that carries on to the floor, offsetting the fluted walnut wall panelling. Also clad in walnut, the reception desk presents a frontage patterned with darker coloured lozenges.

The Mandarin Bar - open also to non-guests - is the centre of hotel life. Here marble dominates: on the floor - with a lozenge motif in white statutory and black Marquina marble - and walls, whose black and white geometrical pattern produces a three-dimensional effect. The entrance to the bar and its central polygonal-shaped counter are also in black Marquina marble, while shiny black Barrisol Mirror stretch fabric creates a spectacular ceiling, further accentuated by slits of light between the canopy segments. Separated from the restaurant by a glazed L-shaped wall, the double height lounge stands out for its verticality, a feature emphasised by the longitudinal stripes on wallpaper and curtains. The relaxed atmosphere of the adjacent Seta restaurant is created with green carpeting and parquet flooring, velvet upholstery, marble-lined splayed windows and a walnut false ceiling.

The two meeting rooms are furnished in line with a high-tech setting. A foldaway partition wall, concealed when not in use inside the enveloping wall panelling, can create different size rooms to customer requirements. Both rooms have remote-operated upholstered black-out panels.
