The Project is located in the Bolayır Peninsula of Çanakkale, a seaside town in west Turkey, con- sisted of 20 villas, social facilities and a guest house in total area of 32.430 m² site.
The site is located on a sloped topography as a part of the beautiful peninsula landscape at the seaside of Bolayır. On the contrary to the inspiring landscape it is hardly possible to use the ex- terior spaces, most of the year, as a matter of the harsh and windy weather in Çanakkale. In this unique geography creating inspiring open spaces in this windy environment became the biggest challenge of the project. In order to extend the interior and the exterior spaces into each other, the Traditional Turkish House became a key inspiration.
Having the site located next to the sea along a high slope, the buildings are placed in harmony with the topography. The existing variation of the slopes curves are reflected in the site plan to maintain the natural ‘spontaneity’ of the site. Instead of composing larger building footprints the building and open spaces divided into smaller terraces. Integrated terraces create a smooth tran- sition between the buildings and the rest of the site. Each villa has its own terraces and gardens overlooking the sea. The site excavation is controlled to limit the dig and the fill within the site so there is no earth to or from other sites are necessary. Natural stone roads receive their organic form from the main design principal of locating the buildings according to the topography.
The house walls acting as a border, bring richness to the streetscape as well as a degradation of privacy to establish the local neighborhood feeling. The courtyard behaves as a semi private gate between the street and the villa while uniting the interior and exterior. This transition from public to private is emphasized in the semi-transparent wall and window elements.
Besides the exterior use of the courtyard relationships the Summer Villas develop climatic poten- tials. The courtyard becomes a warmer, wind protected, open space in winter and it becomes a shaded cooler source of air in summer that extends the possibilities of exterior use.
