Located in the Futian district of Shenzhen, China, the Blossom of Yinli is proposed as an interactive spatial installation to promote Vanke SCPG’s collaborative culture and values, and at the same time, to enliven the surrounding neighborhood. Sited on the plaza between the Vanke SCPG building and the nearby residential communities, this small structure is poised to be a connecting point that offers a public space for citizens to gather, share ideas, and be inspired. The essence of the design concept is to organize the weaved arches that demark spaces and create a perceivably light and interactive structure. Instead of constructing the pavilion to blend in the urban context, our project distinguishes itself from the surroundings and stands out as a landmark because of its unique design. The purposefully delineated form is derived from the landscape in the surrounding area. The curve lines dividing the site form a sophisticated two-dimensional weaving system. By extruding this cluster of curves, a weaving waffle-structure system of the pavilion is constructed. Then, using a group of bubbles form varying in size to cut the waffle into a more dynamic shape to depict a blooming flower form. At the same time, those voids created by the bubbles carved out the interior spaces and created the circulation paths and the main auditorium room. In addition to the carefully sculpted forms, the Blossom of Yinlin also acts as a pioneer by exploring the possibility of using polycarbonate sheets as the exterior materials and construction mean. The utilization of orange and white translucent polycarbonate panels builds the vibrant surface of the pavilion, adding to its sophisticated shape, the pavilion becomes an icon that can’t be mistaken. The bold design using the layering of the structural elements and the carving out the space with form voids to maximize its program, the pavilion is expected to function as a multi-dimensional vehicle for delivering public education, public exhibition, and activities to illustrate the “It’s a wonderful Yinli Life” philosophy. Above all, this project intentionally breaks with conventional design approaches for a public building and is in favor of a more stimulative articulation of public spaces. Taken as a whole, the Vanke SCPG Pavilion becomes a new public icon meant to reconnect the surrounding neighborhoods with the Vanke SCPG complex.
