Sentosa House: a mix of elegance, decoration and proportions

Studio MK27
The initial briefing was simple: an almost surgical intervention to adapt an existing house to a new family. It was assumed it would be necessary changes in some materials and specific modifications in walls. The client had already developed another project with studio mk27 for a house in India that ended up not being built.

The project started to gain greater proportions both from the enthusiasm of the studio and the client, and the intervention became increasingly intrusive: opening walls, lowering ceiling-heights, eliminating staircases, dividing spaces and closing passages. The objective was to correct proportions and alignments, making the internal spaces special.

All the window frames were changed into a more minimal frame, with large glass panes. In the living room, these windows reach 6-meter of glass, opening out the spaces and interlinking the indoor patio and the golf course.

Under the direction of Vastu, other radical changes were done, such as moving the position and shape of the pool, and the location of the doors and windows.

The external areas were redesigned with the collaboration of the Lebanese studio Vladimir Djurovic. The Palissandro marble infinity pool looks out to the golf course. On the Basaltine stone deck a covered lounge was created, while in the inner patio, with 3 glass walls, a pocket bamboo forest filters the sunlight.

The house is distributed over three stories with 5 bedrooms, TV room, dining room, living room, kitchen, study room, spa and playroom totalling 1,000 sqm of area. The 3 floors are reached by 2 staircases and an elevator. The main staircase has 3 chandeliers designed by Carlo Scarpa for Venini hanging over the landing.

Some other works of art, like a sculpture by Brazilian artist Artur Lescher, a large photograph by Cássio Vasconcellos, among others, punctuate the living spaces and circulation.

The largest space of the house is the living room with a 6m ceiling height and enclosed by 2 sides of glass. In this room there is very large bookcase holding books and diverse objects. A thin grafite-colored metallic ladder slides along the shelves.

The client is passionate for vintage furniture and began collecting pieces from the start of the project among auctions, travelling and antique stores. The dining room has a 7-meter long table with diverse chairs designed by George Nakashima.

The decoration is a mixture of great mid-century designers: George Nakashima, Vladimir Kagan, Ib Kofod, Finn Julhl, Ico Parigi, Noguchi, with current pieces designed by Dordoni, Paola Lenti, Piero Lissoni. The rugs, by German brand Jan Kath, are customized for each room.

The gourmet and service kitchens were developed by Molteni – designed by Vincent Van Duysan and the bathrooms are by Salvatori in collaboration with studio mk27.
All the millwork in the house is custom designed by the studio mk27 for this project. Some pieces were also designed by studio mk27 for Agape (DR bathtub) and Minotti (Quadrado) for outdoors.

The general finishings are Basaltine on the floors, walls in walnut wood and wooden slats ceiling in the ground floor. The upper floors have either wooden slats or white ceilings.

This is a project in which the client participated very actively and resulted in something very unique and special.
