This kitchen is part of a total residential renovation of a 100-year old Tribeca loft building. The home’s main living space is one large open room that includes a kitchen, dining room and living room. It stretches from the street to the rear yard. The kitchen is located at one end of this space and faces a picturesque NYC alley vista. The space is ideally suited for both family and large gatherings to enjoy food and camaraderie. Construction of the project is just being completed and when it is furnished, the living space will be lit and hung with artwork that will unify all common areas into a linear gallery. In keeping with the white gallery approach, the design is ultra minimal, visually playing down the numerous appliance and workspace details that typically represent a kitchen’s many functions. Countertops, cabinets and ovens are flush white surfaces; cabinets have blind pulls; small appliances are located inside cabinets behind slide away access doors; recycling bins are under the sink; ceiling lights are recessed; power receptacles are hidden and all surfaces are completely flush.
Despite its understated appearance, the kitchen is highly functional. The tall cabinetry wall and counter preparation areas are almost five meters long and incorporate copious storage and workspace with appliances for serious cooks. The island counter faces the dining table so it can also function as a serving area. Alongside the east-facing terrace, a wood bench is perfectly situated to receive morning light, an ideal place for coffee with the resident sun worshiping dog named Fred.
Note that the pictures we show depict phase one of this project. Phase two will include the redesign and enlargement of the rear-facing terrace to incorporate outdoor dining. Audrey Matlock Architect is an architectural practice based in New York and working internationally. We embrace a modern sensibility that promotes innovation for both its functional and creative promise. Our work explores new combinations of material, structural and spatial relationships that eschew predictability and embrace inspirational and poetic experience. The interaction of technological expression with space, light and form creates projects that are visually refined and functionally finely tuned.
Our projects cover a range of building types and scales, built in cities and landscapes with equal specificity. The urban context is envisioned as a vibrant work in progress where buildings expand on a complex urban history and animate the public realm. In rural settings, a symbiotic and sustainable relationship between buildings and nature intertwines architecture, landscape, topography and climate with human occupation.
