The housing complex „In der Wiesen Süd“ consists of five buildings arranged on the site in order to create a serene environment for the inhabitants. The area opens wide towards the north and closes more densely towards the south, where it allows visual perspectives on the street. The group in the southern area is developed by Artec architects, while Dietrich | Untertrifaller designed the northern part with three tower-like building structures. In the green space to the north, these higher buildings form a central and quiet area for the residents.

The two six-storey buildings take the shape of a flattened hexagon around a hollow core. The numerous balconies offer each apartment different views of the park and the city. The rooms on the ground floor and on the garden level are home to small shops, workshops and offices.
The compact one- to five-room apartments with an average size of 46 to 133 m² offer generous private open spaces such as loggias, balconies and roof gardens. They are orientated towards the east or west and are designed as corner apartments at the ends - pure north-facing flats can thus be avoided. A narrow band of loggias with projecting balconies and the fully glazed façade bring light and openness into the apartments.

An atrium is placed at the core of the building and brings natural light into the access zones. The greened roof accommodates some community facilities of the residential complex, as well as private gardens. The rooms on the ground floor and on the garden level are home to small shops, workshops and offices.

The project was the winner of a public, dialogue-oriented property developer competition. The jury particularly praised the social sustainability: "The project offers very high use-open qualities on the ground floor, it provides a wide variety of rooms for community and commercial use, as well as tenant gardens on the roof".

Reconciling the requirements of affordable rent and /or the targeted budget of investors with a
high quality of living and an architectural planning approach that seeks to avoid entirely erasing all traces of cultural history is always a balancing act. Some characteristics of Dietrich|Untertrifaller’s apartment buildings include clear structures, space-forming façades,
well-lit access areas and generously-proportioned layouts fit for daily use.
Frequently tried and tested with single-family homes and communal infrastructure buildings, they were also able to repeatedly demonstrate their expertise in timber construction with multistory
apartment buildings. A prototype for a timber apartment complex completed in 2006 on Mühlweg in Vienna, comprising four five-story solid timber structures built according to passive house guidelines, opened the door to the highly competitive Viennese housing market.
Ever since then, the firm Dietrich|Untertrifaller has become one of the most important players in this market as well. In “In der Wiesen”, one of the key urban development areas in the southern part of Vienna, three tower-like apartment buildings with natural atriums have been built. This is further proof of their competence in pioneering residential construction.

Curriculum

The office, founded in 1994, is one of the iconic agencies of the renowned School of Vorarlberg. The entire spectrum ranging from single-family homes through alterations of existing buildings to large-scale buildings and urban structures defies specialization, constantly challenges and inspires creativity and an inquiring mind. Flashy architecture in the formal sense is not our style, but rather exciting architecture is, which is always developed from the relationship to the respective place and its environment and the required program. A decisive factor in all our work is the resource-saving and appropriate use of materials and structures, with a particular interest in and commitment to contemporary timber construction. The office is lead by Helmut Dietrich, Much Untertrifaller, Dominik Philipp and Patrick Stremler and employs today an international team of 70 architects working in Austria (Bregenz and Vienna), Switzerland (St Gallen), France (Paris) and Germany (Munich).
