CESCA VAS POOL COMPLEX

The space where the construction of the new swimming pool is planned is dominated by the existing velodrome, which has recently been roofed over. We do not want to break this hierarchy with the new swimming pool facility, as this would create unnecessary clutter in the space. The new swimming pool facility therefore takes advantage of the existing topography of the sloping site so that it is located as low as possible and therefore does not represent a new spatial dominant. It presents itself as a simple roof floating above the terrain.

The program levels of the new facility are set between the level of the existing plateau in front of the velodrome on one side and the level of the existing terrain on the far NW edge of the proposed facility on the other. The first transforms in to the main plaza connecting both sports facilities, the second is the exit from the swimming platform during major sports events (triathlon). The entrance level of the swimming pool is set lower than the level of the new main plaza, so that it is clearly separated from it and also protected from the hazards of the traffic areas. Due to its limited size it creates a sheltered new entrance square. By deepening the levels, the stands are created at their edges both inside and outside the building. These form amphitheater like spaces, suitable for all types of organized or spontaneous events, giving the new facility a distinctive ambient.
The deepening of the levels creates banks on their edges. These form amphitheater spaces, which are accessible from the upper level and are suitable for all kinds of organized or spontaneous events. The entrance level is lower than the traffic plateau, therefore it is clearly separated from it and also protected from the dangers of traffic areas. Due to its limited size, it creates better environment for the outdoor catering space at the entrance to the building.
The pool complex consists of rooms of different sizes and different heights. The rooms are placed in three levels of the building in a way that they form a solid shape, which is the foundation of energy efficient construction and allow short functional connections, which means good use of space. The entrance and dressing rooms are on the middle level, above them are placed all »dry spaces« (hall, fitness and administration) and saunas, which due to their purpose require a certain privacy. Service and engine rooms are located below the entrance. The pool area is organized on two levels: on the level of dressing rooms there is a smaller, heated pool. The height of that space is higher than in the dressing rooms due to the height usage during the construction of the pool hall. The heating and the main pool are connected via grandstands that embrace the main pool on two sides. Due to this height difference, the height of the space above the main pool is additionally elevated. Such a leveling is welcome for those visitors who do not have limited mobility. The stands are versatile, both for observing what is happening on the water as for recreation. Both levels are connected by an elevator, which allows access for the disabled.

Curriculum

Enota was founded in 1998 with the ambition to create contemporary and critical architectural practice of an open type based on collective approach to development of architectural and urban solutions. Constant changes and new complex situations in the world around us drive us to think about new architectural and urban solutions. In order to be able to produce answers to those new questions we believe it’s time to surpass the boundaries of conventional discipline set mainly by our cultural backgrounds. Enota’s team of architects focuses on research driven design of the environment where study of contemporary social organizations and use of new technologies are interwoven to produce innovative and effective solutions. Enota’s solutions are strongly influenced by research, reinterpretation and development of social, organizational and design algorithms that derive from nature. The result is always a strong binding of the buildings with the environment that surrounds them.
